This Labor Day weekend, Greg and I were all set to drive out to Illinois together to spend time with family and for my bridal shower. Well, Friday morning rolled around and the cold that I so generously gave to Greg had finally taken hold of him. He could barely get out of bed and we realized that a weekend away from home was not what the doctor would order for him. So I headed out on the dreaded trans-Missouri drive by myself. I’ve been spoiled lately having Greg doing most of the driving, I’d forgotten how much it stinks to be the driver. But at least I got to drive our cherry-red Honda Fit, it does get better gas mileage after all!
Before my bridal shower on Saturday, I was set to work along with my sister-in-law, Rachel, preparing flowers and food for the event. Rachel and I were obtaining the secrets to making the perfect grasshopper pie. The recipe is easy enough to jot down on a note-card, but there are infinite little tricks that are only known to those who have been personally instructed in the art of grasshopper pie making. If you are unfamiliar with grasshopper pie, it is the most perfect summer-time dessert. Its minty and chocolatey and frozen and delicious. Mom also bought 40 of the most glorious large and cheerful sunflowers from the local farmers market. Rachel and I cut them and scattered them in vases throughout the house. Unfortunatley, our bright and cheery sunflowers left bright and cheery rings of yellow pollen on the counter surfaces around every arrangement. It was worth it though, they were gorgeous! Everything at the shower was lovely and it was so fun to spend time with my family in anticipation for the big day.
- 40 farm-fresh sunflowers in a bucket.
- We scattered flowers throughout the house.
- All my favorites, sunflowers, chocolates and mimosas.
Meanwhile, back on the homefront…Big things were happening with the relationship of our two kitties. Sophie became, I guess its best to say – tolerant – of Phil. He is now allowed downstairs and may socialize with Greg and I on a limited basis. They were caught sitting next to each other on the stairs and have even been spied sleeping in the same room as one another. Phil has even been granted access to (gasp) our bedroom. A corner has been turned and there is finally harmony among the animals. Once they start cuddling together in a big orange and brown tabby-colored ball, we’ll get pictures of it up for all to see! It may be months or even years but I will never give up hope.
